The Viral creation
I had wanted to build one for 2 years since seeing a Remote Control Lawn Mower in MAKE Magazine.
I couldn't find out how to afford it. So, I found lot of other projects.
In July, I turned 31 and had another 'age crisis'. This project was on my bucket list and I wanted to develop my Electrical Engineering skills (this TED talk shows why).
I did lots of research and sourced the materials for the lowest cost possible. I built it in 8 hours, but it took me 2 weeks to complete. Why? Because I have 2 daughters that need an involved dad and a wife that needs a loving husband. I found time when they were down for naps, after they went to sleep, before they woke up, and had them help 'do a project with daddy'.
My facebook and Tek Venture friends encouraged me every step of the way so I kept them updated with funny videos and transparent tests.
After not mowing my yard for 2 weeks (to put the pressure on), I got it working and the video went 'Fort Wayne Viral.' My friends got a kick out of it and my neighbors looked at me weird...
Within hours of getting it working, I took it apart and surprised my girls with a Remote Control Power Wheels Jeep! I'm always looking for ways to involve them so I can achieve 'Cool Dad' status.
I challenge myself to be creative so I looked for other ways I could automate my life. On Labor Day, I created the Remote Control Cooler at the Lake! I secretly drove it up and down the shore and got 13 free beers! My 2 business-savvy uncles suggested I patent it, but I would rather help others make their own.
Trying to keep with one new idea a month, I converted it to the Remote Control Candy Crusader. I wanted to Trick or Treat with my girls so I took the candy with us! The neighbors flipped out!
The easiest version of them all was the Remote Control Snow Blower. In less than an hour, I had it converted over and throwing snow! 2 bolts and a hose clamp is all it took! After the first test, I quickly realized traction was going to be an issue. I changed out the tires and added chains.
Eagerly awaiting the next snow, I started thinking how to make the design better and brainstorming how to catch it on video. Meanwhile, I took it to 2 elementary schools to inspire students in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). It was extremely fulfilling and aligns with my passions to help others with the talents God has blessed me with.
With 12 days off from work and a big snow storm coming, the finale of my project was coming. I recorded the creation in action and published my 'Nerd with a Niche' video on Facebook for my friends to laugh at. It got a great response from them so I submitted it, on a whim, to the local news station. Expecting no response at all, I was very surprised to get a call from their reporter! She wanted me to do an interview at noon but I was at work till 5 and had to say 'no.' I thought that I lost my chance and was kicking my butt for saying 'no!' Then, on my way home from work, Randy, the evening reporter, called me and I said 'YES!' The interview was at 6pm and it aired at 11pm. Awesome! Great reporting, great times! Friday was really fun at work and it gave me a chance to thank everyone who helped and encouraged me with the project.
Friday just before dinner, Randy said CNN picked up the story! I did one of many happy dances when I found out! While at Panera, I joked and said to my wife, "I'm keeping my phone close by in-case CNN calls." Just then, my phone rings! It was Robert Bumsted from the Associated Press! I did a 2 minute interview and he put together a great piece!
On Saturday, my friends from NYC to LA saw it on their local and national TVs! I also took some time and cleared 2 drive ways for NeighborLink. An 84 yr old woman and a disabled woman who just happened to see it on TV were very understanding. She recorded it with her cell phone the whole time! Saturday night, my world was rocked when I saw it on ABC World News with David Muir!
On Sunday, it was on Good Morning America. Church was fun and I got to promote Financial Peace University! I also worked on this website to capture all the facts and feelings. I'm humbled at what's happening and give all the Glory to God.
